Oh, the fourth of July is near. YAY! Independence day is about freedom. It seems that Octavius Hunt Limited wants you to have the freedom of letting you think it’s safe to light sparklers off inside of your home! Oh AMERICA, Land of the Free, Land of Opportunity, and Anything for a thrill, right? We’re Suckers, We’ll bite!
Octavius Hunt Limited petitioned the National Safety Agency requesting that they allow the safety label “DO NOT USE INDOORS” not be put on the sparklers that they are manufacturing.
The use of sparklers INDOORS would probably be more dangerous.
Due to the record of injuries associated with outdoor sparklers, the likelihood that indoor sparklers will produce similar mishaps as outdoor sparklers, and the expected increased risk of burns and residential fires associated with sparklers used indoors, the United States Consumer Public Safety Commission cannot find that the use of a mini sparkler indoors constitutes a “Minor Hazard”.
The Commission acknowledges that Octavius Hunt is within standards of its own government requirements, however, the request is denied to label the product as indoor safe for the American Consumer.
While the information you provided demonstrates that mini sparklers sold by Octavius Hunt Limited conform to the British Standard for fireworks (BS 7114 part 2:1988), it does not address the Commission’s long-standing concern that sparklers, should they come into contact with indoor items, may ignite the items and start a fire.
Be afraid and Be Careful!
Igniting fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July is a long-standing American tradition. But celebrations can turn tragic if fireworks are not handled properly.
No matter what kind of fireworks you are celebrating with, even if it’s a birthday sparkler, I doubt that you should be letting them zing off inside of your home!
In 2000, fireworks injuries resulted in 10 deaths and an estimated 11,000 injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Following are some safety tips, potential dangers, and fireworks laws in the United States.
Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
Read and follow all warnings and instructions
Always have an adult present
Only buy from reliable fireworks vendors
Make sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks
Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials
Light only one at a time
Never try to relight fireworks that have malfunctioned
Keep a bucket of water or hose handy in case of malfunction or fire
Never throw fireworks at another person, carry them in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers
It’s a good idea to save up some money and buy something you need. Maybe you need the sink replaced in the kitchen because it’s in a leaky mess of disrepair. Your floor in the kitchen is slowly being destroyed by the constant, yet small, amounts of water that is seaping onto it every hour of every day.
